The benedictine monastery of Marienberg in Burgusio

The abbey’s white and massive building dominates from the side of the mountain, revealing its stern presence to the visitors from afar.

Only very few Benedictine monks are still permanently residing at the monastery, but over the centuries the abbey has been a crucial centre for the young County of Tyrol. The crypts are the heart of the monastery, the oldest and most refined part of the whole complex. The unparalleled beauty of the frescos is the highest expression of the local Romanic art of the 12th century.

It is a rare emotion to assist to the daily readings of the vespers, under the eyes of angels floating in a lapis lazuli blue sky.
